Zaha Hadid Architects' Timber Football Stadium Clears Key Planning Hurdle
The ambitious plans for the world’s first all-timber football stadium, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects for Forest Green Rovers, have reached another milestone. Stroud District Council’s development control committee recently approved a reserved-matters application for the 5,000-seat stadium in Gloucestershire.
This decision follows outline planning consent granted five years ago. Planning officers confirmed that the latest proposals align with the conditions and legal agreements established in the initial approval. They praised the design’s high quality and the landscaping's ability to mitigate and enhance the site. You can see images of the timber football stadium on the Architects Journal website.
Evolution of the Plans
The original outline approval, granted in December 2019, came after initial plans were rejected due to concerns about noise, traffic, and environmental impact. The revised proposals addressed these issues by:
- Replacing one grass pitch with an all-weather surface.
- Updating the landscaping strategy.
- Enhancing matchday transport options.
- Providing detailed clarifications on noise management.
A Sustainable Vision
Forest Green Rovers, recognised by the UN as the world’s first carbon-neutral football club, is committed to sustainability. The club, chaired by environmentalist and Ecotricity founder Dale Vince, has long championed green initiatives. From vegan food offerings to renewable energy use, the club has set benchmarks for environmental stewardship.
The proposed stadium reflects this ethos. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the venue will be constructed entirely from wood—an industry first. Vince highlighted the importance of timber, stating, “Wood is not only a naturally occurring material, but it also has very low carbon content. With building materials accounting for around three-quarters of a stadium’s lifetime carbon impact, this design ensures our stadium will have the lowest carbon footprint of any in the world.”
Forest Green Rovers’ Green Journey
Currently based at the New Lawn stadium in Nailsworth, Forest Green Rovers has been a pioneer in eco-friendly upgrades since Vince took over in 2010. Innovations include:
- Solar panels and a solar-powered robotic grass mower.
- The world’s first organic football pitch.
The move to a timber stadium is the next step in the club’s green legacy.
What’s Next?
With this planning approval, Forest Green Rovers are closer than ever to breaking ground on what promises to be a landmark in sustainable architecture and football. Once completed, the stadium will stand as a testament to innovative design and environmental responsibility, setting new standards for sports venues worldwide.
