Working with a Recruiter – Candidate FAQs
Job hunting can be daunting, especially when you're navigating it alone. From writing the perfect CV to preparing for interviews, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s where recruiters come in. But if you've never worked with a recruiter before, you might be unsure about what to expect, how the process works, or whether it costs you anything.
At Bennett & Game, we work closely with candidates across various industries to help them find roles that genuinely match their skills, goals, and personality. Whether you’re actively looking or just testing the waters, we’re here to simplify the process and be your partner through every step.
To help you understand what working with a recruiter involves, here are the most frequently asked questions we hear from candidates:
1. What exactly does a recruiter do?
We act as a bridge between you and employers. Our job is to match your skills, experience, and goals with job opportunities that fit you - and to guide you through the hiring process from application to offer.
2. Do I have to pay to work with a recruiter?
Absolutely not! Our services are free for candidates. We’re paid by the hiring companies when we successfully place someone in a role. If you are asked by a Recruiter to pay them, do not agree to this and stop working with them immediately.
3. How involved is a recruiter in the job searching process?
Very! We’ll help you polish your CV, prepare for interviews, provide insights into the company culture, and give feedback at each stage. Think of us as your job search partner.
4. Will I be put forward for roles without my consent?
No, never. We always ask for your permission before submitting your CV to any employer.
5. How does a recruiter decide which jobs to put me forward for?
We’ll review your CV, have a thorough conversation to understand your goals, experience, and preferences, and match you with roles that genuinely suit your profile and ambitions. If we don’t have a particular role that suits you at that time, we will venture out to previous or new clients who we feel would be best suited to you.
6. What kind of companies do you recruit for?
Our expanding client base ranges from small businesses and SME’s, through to national and global blue chip companies covering industries such as architecture, construction, civil engineering, finance and accountancy, manufacturing and supply chain. The recruitment solution we provide to our clients relates to the introduction of candidates on a Permanent, Interim or Fixed Term Contract basis.
7. How quickly can I expect to find a job?
It varies. Some candidates are placed within a few days, while others may take a few weeks. We’ll keep you updated regularly and stay proactive in your job search. Timeframes vary based on industry needs and if you meet the criteria our clients give us, but we will always expand our search to help you find the perfect job.
8. Will I get feedback if I’m not successful?
Yes, we always aim to provide constructive feedback so you can improve for future opportunities. We always ask our clients for feedback on why you were not successful in order to help you be successful next time.
9. Can I still apply for jobs on my own while working with you?
Of course! But we ask that you keep us informed so we can avoid submitting you to the same roles and ensure we’re working efficiently on your behalf. We will discuss any current partnerships we have ongoing to avoid any duplicate applications and give you the best chance of being invited to an interview.
10. What if I get a job through another route - Do I owe you anything?
Not at all. If you land a role elsewhere, just let us know, and we’ll wish you all the best in your new position!
