McLaren Construction Set to Surpass £1bn Revenue Milestone Amid Major Project Wins
McLaren Construction is on track to exceed £1 billion in revenue for the first time, as the company secures several high-profile contracts. The contractor is expected to soon sign deals for the £200 million Cardiff Arena project and the £120 million refurbishment of London’s iconic Barkers of Kensington department store.
These wins come after a strong financial performance in the year ending 31 July 2024, with McLaren reporting a turnover of £924 million—slightly down from £964 million the previous year—but nearly doubling its pre-tax profit from £6.3 million to £11.9 million.
Strategic Growth and Expansion
McLaren’s continued success has been driven by diversification and the launch of a new construction management division, with its first major contract award expected soon. Chairman Kevin Taylor highlighted the company’s steady growth, stating:
“A stable year, full of successes for our customers and teams, has given us the foundations for further growth and diversification from the second half of 2024.
New divisions offer new construction management capability and bring all the benefits of McLaren’s skills and track record to projects in Yorkshire and the Northeast.
2025 will be the year we exceed turnover of £1 billion, and that is a major achievement for a privately owned contractor. My colleagues should be very proud of what they have achieved together.”
McLaren’s portfolio continues to expand, with a significant portion of its revenue coming from repeat business. In the last financial year, 74% of the firm’s turnover was from long-term partnerships with developers such as British Land, Landsec, Stoford, GLP, Be First, DFE, Argent Miller Developments, and the Cadogan Estate. The company remains active across multiple sectors, including offices, residential, retail, education, healthcare, student accommodation, industrial and logistics, data centres, hotels, and leisure.
Addressing Regulatory Challenges in the Building Safety Act
As part of its commitment to high-rise residential development and remediation work, McLaren has heavily invested in ensuring compliance with the Building Safety Act. However, like others in the industry, the company is facing delays due to the Building Safety Regulator approval process, impacting project timelines.
Group CEO Paul Heather has called for a revamp of the system, suggesting a pre-application process similar to planning procedures. He explained:
“The impact of the approvals process for Gateways 2 and 3 is delays of 6-12 months on new builds. These delays are creating significant cost impacts, causing investors to hold back finance, and in some cases, making projects unviable.
One way to maintain viability on larger schemes with multimillion-pound investment could be to introduce a building safety pre-application procedure akin to the pre-application process in the planning system. These pre-apps would be funded by the developers, helping the Building Safety Regulator to resource the process.
A pre-application consultation process would allow the project team to resolve any project-specific regulatory interpretation, progress design to RIBA stage four, and apply with confidence. It would de-risk the application process, maintain the flow of finance to the sector, and aid in delivering targets set by the government for accelerating development.
There is no question of watering down the new standards. Developers and their professional teams have the capability to design and develop buildings in full compliance with the enhanced regulatory framework.”
A Promising Future
With a robust project pipeline, strong financial performance, and a commitment to overcoming industry challenges, McLaren is poised for continued growth. As the company looks ahead to 2025, its strategic expansions and innovative solutions will be key to maintaining momentum and delivering transformative projects across the UK.
